Brief
The recent layoffs in the tech and media industries, having impressive interview skills is crucial. Mockmate, founded in 2021 in Barcelona, is dedicated to change the job searching and recruitment with AI technology, to help job seeker getting hired faster.
In Q2 of 2021, the startup received seed funding to build the product. I joined the team as the Product Design for 3 months to deliver an entire UX research plan, competitor analysis, concepting, feature & functionality metrics and detailed wireframes.

1.1 User Interview
I scheduled a series of 15 one-on-one online interviews with a diverse range of participants, including recent graduates (10), seasoned professionals(3), and hiring managers(2) representing various companies across different industries. These interviews were planned to gather comprehensive insights into each user group's needs, preferences, and pain points.
By engaging with fresh graduates, I aimed to understand their career aspirations, challenges in preparing interviews, and expectations from potential employers during the recruitment process.
Discussions with experienced professionals provided valuable perspectives on challenges in their career progression and skill development, and the evolving demands of their respective industries.
Conversations with hiring managers offered crucial insights into recruitment processes, desired qualifications, and the qualities sought in potential candidates.
1.2 Personas
Through these interviews, I gained in-depth knowledge of each user segment's motivations, behaviors, and goals, enabling me to craft three distinct user personas (see below) that accurately reflect the diverse needs and expectations of the target audience.
The first type of persona is fresh graduate with technical background with struggling prepare for the
1.3 User needs
The research revealed significant insights into the challenges faced by job seekers during the recruitment process.
70% job seekers feel behaviour questions are the hardest part along the recruitment session.
55% interviewees easily get nervous in the interview, and used to forget answers to some questions.
They usually prepare the interview in advance, but only practise by heart instead of speak it loud due to embarrassment.
“How might we help practising for the interview questions beforehand?”
02. Concept
Based on the user needs, I discussed with the founders about the product strategy, and determine the Product value proposition
Mockmate - an AI guide that offers individuals automated mock interviews and provide feedbacks
Interview practice and preparation component
The platform include the following components:
Interview question bank, voice record & transcript process
Tailored advice and feedback for the users to receive
03. Competitor Analysis
I created the competitor map with the existing solutions in the markets. Compared to other existing solutions, Mockmate gains handful of benefits from its AI application for assisting and educating individual for interviews. With the confidence that in the area of AI-assisted field, tools focusing on assisting and simulating interview are still underserved.
04. Design Process
Focusing on the individual user needs, I created a Blueprint diagram and a User Journey Map with Emotion, to visualize the relationships in a Blueprint diagram between the user, the tool and the processes with the touchpoints in a specific journey with emotion change.
To help us identify the features that would be core to the MVP (Minimum Viable Product). I scheduled a few meetings with the founder and the CTO, to define the features listed according to:
Essential - Importance to User
High / Low Priority - Less / More Technical Complexity
and then position the feature’s on one of 4 Quadrants Table as following

06. User Flows
3 User flows have been created:
As a job seeker, the user want to complete a mock interview with camera.
As a job seeker, the user want to review the answers and submit to AI for evaluation.
As a job seeker, the user want to sign up and get onboard.
07. Wireframes
I created the wireframes for the visual representation of the platform. After completing the first version with low-fidelity, I have conducted some usability tests and improved it with users’ feedback.
After a few iterations, I added details step by step to the wireframe and refined it until we had a clear picture of what worked for the users. Below are the low-fi, examples of users ‘feedback and the final wireframes.
